Packing the holiday essentials: a pharmacist’s recommendations
You’ve been counting down the months until your summer holiday since Christmas, dreaming of sunshine, beaches and cocktails.
You’ve packed all the essentials like sun cream and a good book, and you’ve managed to narrow it down to only six pairs of shoes but what about a first aid kit? It’s the most boring thing to think about before going on holiday but packing some basic essentials will mean you are equipped to deal with most minor situations wherever you are without having to look for a local pharmacy.
Award-winning pharmacist and PillTime founder Paul Mayberry tells us the ten holiday essentials to pack in your first aid kit:
pack a small bottle or packet of painkillers like paracetamol and ibuprofen, for treating headaches and minor aches and pains.
2. Antiseptic wipes:
these are great for cleaning cuts or abrasions to prevent infection.
particularly if you have little ones, a multipack of plasters in various sizes are perfect for covering any cuts and grazes and protecting against infection.
4. Hand sanitiser:
always carry hand sanitiser with you for sterilising your hands while out and about.
5. Bandages & gauge pads:
a small roll of bandage and a few gauze pads are useful for more serious cuts and wounds.
6. Scissors, safety pins & tweezers:
Scissors and safety pins are useful for cutting and securing bandages. Tweezers are essential for extracting a splinter, or removing grit from a wound.
7. Diarrhoea relief:
it’s not uncommon to get an upset tummy when on holiday so don’t forget to pack some diarrhoea relief pills or powders.
8. Mosquito repellent:
avoid mosquito bites by using insect repellents containing DEET, particularly during the evenings when they are most likely to bite.
available as tablets and creams and vital to help reduce itchiness and inflammation caused by allergies and insect bites.
10. Prescription medication:
if you take any regular prescription medication, like high blood pressure tables or asthma inhalers, make sure you take enough with you on holiday.
